About
Self Portrait, 2023
Hannibal Coates is an Australian realist painter, from the Barossa Valley in rural South Australia.
In 2021, Coates graduated from Adelaide Central School of Art, Adelaide. Committed to furthering his understanding of 19th century academic and figurative work, he travelled to Florence, Italy to begin intensive training at Charles H Cecil Studios, finishing his studies in 2023.
Coates’ practice focuses on developing a language of oil painting through a range of subject matter, primarily portraiture. Riffing on the ideas and techniques of the Old Masters, his work draws back the curtain on moments both intimate and in-between.
Coates exhibits internationally and has been a finalist in such prizes as the Percival Portrait Prize (2022) as well as The Royal Society of Arts South Australia (2024) where he was presented a Commended Award.
Hannibal currently lives and works in Paris, France.
